“I believe that ‘to mother’ means ‘to give life.’” – Sister Neill F. Marriott
I love the symbolic link between the Tree of Life and motherhood. Whether mortal or eternal, the fruits of motherhood is life. While biblical scholars are beginning to acknowledge a link, Latter-Day Saints have long believed that motherhood is eternal, and as sure as we have a Father in heaven, we have a Mother there, too. While a veil of knowledge and understanding is placed in front us now, I believe that there will come a day that veil will be lifted and we will know Her, and to know Her will be partaking the Fruit of Eternal Life that we have pursued since Adam and Eve became subject to sin and death. Yet, God has given us earthly mothers as glimpses into the divine role which mothers play now and eternally. For every child she has held, or lost, or helped rear, a mother has given, and will continue to give eternally, the fruits of life to the children of God. I wanted to honor mothers – past, present, and future, mortal and eternal – by painting a symbolic link between them and the Tree of Life.
“Motherhood is the one thing in all the world which most truly exemplifies the God-given virtues of creating and sacrificing. Though it carries the woman close to the brink of death, motherhood also leads her into the very realm of the fountains of life, and makes her co-partner with the Creator in bestowing upon eternal spirits mortal life.” – David O.
